Linoleic acid

linoleic acid

What is linoleic acid?

Linoleic acid is a polyunsaturated fatty acid with multiple uses and functions. One of the most effective and proven formulations of this acid is the creation of cleaning products, chemical goods, pharmaceutical components, among others.

This acid is only found in certain vegetable oils, such as soybean, sunflower, pumpkin, corn or cotton. It responds to the formula: C18H32O2, which corresponds to the mono-carboxylic acid composed by a straight chain with 18 carbon atoms and two double “cis” bonds, in position 9 and 12. It has a linoleic acid content ranging between 45- 70%

Origins and extraction of Linoleic acid

Linoleic acid is obtained from the hydrolysis -chemical decomposition in which a compound is split into other compounds by reacting with water- of vegetable oils rich in linoleic acid (mainly sunflower and soybean oils). The obtained fatty acid is purified by further distillation.

linoleic acid origin form

It is an essential and fundamental acid for our body, in charge of our development and growth. Its functions in our body are: improving the immune system and -by increasing defences- the creation of hormones, functioning of neurons, reduction of cholesterol, a powerful antioxidant, among others.

Linoleic acid uses and roperties

Linoleic acid is a slightly yellowish pasty at room temperature (its freezing point is about 17 – 24 °C). It is a substance of great value and importance in various industries and companies.

The conjugation of linoleic acid to create products is quite praised because its great effectiveness and safety to implement certain activities.

The main destinations of linoleic acid are applications in the production of alkyd resins and epoxy esters with little tendency to yellowing by air drying and oven, moisturizers pigments, soft soaps and hard printing ink binders.

linoleic acid uses

Furthermore, it is also used as raw material in the manufacture of emulsifiers, fatty acid esters, fatty acid amides, fatty acid alkanolamides for detergents, insecticides and pharmaceuticals.
Linoleic acid is as a biological detergent that allows its application and use in various industries. The interest aroused by this acid comes from the discovery of its excellent properties and its staging with different products and ingredients.

Further research carried out by different specialists put this acid in the spotlight because it is an essential substance, not only beneficial to our bodies, but also to different industries and companies.
